CEL
is the pioneer in India to develop process technology for
solar photovoltaic cells. Starting in 1976, the company began
processing 2 inch wafer with Vacuum metalisation Technology
when only major Oil Companies were Investing in R&D to develop
solar photovoltaic technology. From such humble beginning,
CEL progressed to develop and engage in commercial
production of 4 inch round silicon wafers exhibiting efficiency
in excess of 12%.
Being a
technology company, CEL initiated linkages with Inter
University Micro Electronic Centre (IMEC) of Belgium to undertake
commercial production of the Screen Printing Diffusion Process
developed by the latter. Solar Photovoltaic cells currently
manufactured at CEL exhibits efficiency in excess of
15% (after anti-reflection coating) and uses two sets of back
printing to achieve high back surface field (BSF) and high
Open Circuit Voltages (Voc) in addition to the unique proprietary
Screen Printing Diffusion.

Grooved Buried Contact Technology Cells (LGBC).
CEL
also manufacture LGBC Technology cells through Technology
linkage with the University of New Wales, Australia. LGBC
technology offers unique features compared to Screen Printed
Technology Cells
- Employ
double diffusion to achieve up to 15% higher collection of
carriers.
- Back Surface Fields (BSF) is created by a process of Aluminium
evaporation.
- Laser Grooved Grid lines are 60 Micron deep and 40 micron
wide with grid lines separated by just 1.2 mm.
- Bus bars are laser grooved and each bus bar has about 20
grooves separated by a mere 100 microns.
- Electroless plating of Nickel, Copper and Silver on grooves
to ensure low resistivity.
- High Fill Factor and consequently higher efficiency.
LGBC Cells
exhibit efficiency of over 17% and are available
in 4 inch round and 4 inch PS sizes.
